Help1Up is the furniture industry’s unified charitable effort, administered by the National Furniture Bank Association. The program encourages consumers to shop at participating retailers and add a tax-deductible 1% to their purchases. Proceeds from Help1Up are used to open and support furniture banks in a variety of ways.
    • Establishment of new furniture banks in underserved areas
    • Centralized assistance and operational guidance for existing furniture banks
     •Grants for new and existing furniture banks
    • Facilitation of donated household furnishings acquisitions

A “furniture bank” is a non-profit organization that collects furniture from the general public and provides it to those in need. Typical clients of furniture banks are women and children escaping domestic violence, families below the poverty line, victims of natural disasters, such as fire or flood, and others requiring emergency assistance. Clients of furniture banks are referred through a qualified social service agency, charity, or case worker. Furniture banks also serve us by keeping thousands of tons of used furniture out of incinerators and landfills every year. In 1999, operators of twenty furniture banks created the National Furniture Bank Association (NFBA) to provide a forum to exchange practical information and techniques.  The NFBA is a non-profit organization with a permanent 501(c)(3) status declaration from the Internal Revenue Service.
